Rafa Damage King Build - Borderlands 4 Guide
Rafa Gun Damage Build — The Overdrive Machine
Introduction
Rafa’s “Gun Damage” setup has quickly become one of the most flexible and satisfying builds in Borderlands 4 for me. It melts mobs with almost any weapon and can turn into a boss-killer with just a few tweaks. After quite some iterations, this version finally feels right — strong, fast, and simple to maintain without unnecessary gimmicks.

Core Idea
This build revolves around Overdrive, Rafa’s Vault Hunter trait. Each time you activate your action skill, you gain movement speed and raw damage for its entire duration. Movement speed is a small bonus — but the damage scaling through Overdrive and the Dancer class mod turns this into a monster.
The concept is simple:
- Keep your action skill active as long as possible.
- Convert your gun damage boosts into both action skill damage and overall DPS.
- Maintain Overdrive stacks for as long as there are enemies alive.
The result: smooth, uninterrupted mobbing and bossing without ever feeling locked into one weapon type.
Action Skill Setup
We’re using Peace Breaker Cannons — medium-power cannons that scale off gun damage through specialization later. Initially, they were half the build’s focus, but after refinement they became more of a support mechanic that keeps Overdrive rolling while amplifying every weapon you pick up.
Augments
For Bossing: Bullet Buddy Deluxe
- Regenerates magazine ammo.
- Reactivating your action skill grants 8 seconds of unlimited ammo — absurdly strong for single-target burst.
- Works perfectly with shotguns like Hellwalker or the B.O.D.
For Mobbing: Instinto
- Adds crit chance, crit damage, and extends action skill duration per kill.
- Keeps Overdrive and action skill active basically forever in mobbing zones.
Skill Allocation
After some tweaking, this distribution feels best balanced between damage, uptime, and consistency.
Red Tree — Core Damage
- 5 pts: Sitiar Straight gun damage (+25%)
- 5 pts: Juerga Critical hits extend action skill duration
- 3 pts: El Valiente Damage increase based on shield level
- 1 pt: Resiliencia Flat damage reduction (scales later through Overdrive)
The last point (Resiliencia) is flexible; you can invest it elsewhere if you prefer.
Blue Tree — Fire Rate and Handling
Top Part:
- 5 pts: Las Jaras Ammo regeneration
- 5 pts: The Thrill Fire rate boost
- 4 pts: Al Centro Gun handling to counterbalance later penalties
- 1 pt: Metal Management Infinite ammo for 2 seconds on action skill activation
Bottom Part:
- 5 pts: Brain Dump Crit chance (Overdrive skill)
- 5 pts: El Soldado Gun damage (Overdrive skill)
- 5 pts: Jaque — generates stacks when dealing skill damage; each stack amplifies all Overdrive bonuses (up to 20 × 2.5%)
- 5 pts: Deadline — adds reload and fire-rate bonuses
Key Mechanic — Overdrive Stacking
With Jaque active, every Overdrive bonus scales per stack — up to +50% effectiveness at 20 stacks. Combined with the Dancer class mod (see below), all Overdrive bonuses are doubled again.
This is what makes the build explode in power.
Class Mod — The Dancer
This is the class mod for Rafa. It doubles all Overdrive bonuses and ends Overdrive when your action skill expires — which we conveniently prevent through Tito uptime and specialization cooldown tricks.
Best-in-slot roll:
- +5 points into Temerario (Overdrive gun damage, −handling)
- +1 point into Soltado (doubles all Overdrive bonuses for 8 seconds on kill)
- Passive: any damage, action skill duration, or gun crit roll
Without extra gun handling from the blue tree, your accuracy would nosedive — so keep those four points. Once this mod is equipped, everything in the build clicks.
Specializations
- Riddle You This: Stacking gun damage up to +50%
- In the Zone: Adds gun and crit damage while ADS
- Now with Caffeine: Reduces action skill cooldown whenever a rep kit triggers — crucial for nonstop uptime
- I Am a Gun: (optional when unlocked) Converts 50% of gun damage boosts into action skill damage
Together, these make both cannons and guns feed into one another.
6. Gear Recommendations
Lets go from top left to bottom right.
Rep Kits
- Triple Bypass – Three charges = three instant action-skill refreshes. Great for boss loops. Look for rolls with +Power Cycle or Overshield. One with +Reload Speed is nice, but you should not need to reload often.
- Shiny War Paint – +30% fire rate / movement speed. Add Enraged for +30% all-source damage.
- Kill Spring – For mobbing endurance. Converts overkill damage into healing orbs.
This is mine at the moment. Still looking for an item with the Bullets to Spare firmware to apply it to mine.
Ordnances
While this build focuses on gun damage and Overdrive stacking, a few side tools can make fights smoother — or simply more fun.
Crit Knife
Once a staple in earlier crit setups, but here it’s purely optional. With roughly 75 % base crit chance, you’re already landing criticals without effort. The knife’s extra crit bonus adds little and can safely stay in storage unless you enjoy the rhythm of weaving in melee hits.
Slippy
A personal favorite for leveling and mobbing. The Slippy’s ricochet bounce tears through clustered enemies and is particularly strong against Vile targets, instantly cracking their crystal armor.
It’s light, fast, and consistent — a perfect sidearm between reloads or during chaotic mobbing sections. Even in late game, it holds up thanks to its handling speed and the way it naturally benefits from all your gun buffs.
Class Mod
There is no substitute for The Dancer here. It is by far the best class mod for this build and a mandatory thing.
If you can get one with +5 Temerario and +1 Soldado, as mentioned above, that’s ideal. But a +3 Temerario roll is still very good but +1 Soldado is a must-have for the doubled Overdrive bonuses.
Good rolls in addition to the above are: Action Skill Damage, Skill Damage, Gun Damage.
Shields
The shield slot in this build is more than just defense — it directly feeds your uptime, damage rhythm, and survivability.
- Super Soldier: +25% fire rate / movement when full, +ammo regen. - Best all-round pick. Grants +25 % fire rate and movement when full, plus steady ammo regen. Keeps uptime high in any fight.
- Onion Shield: Great for survivability. Segment breaks give 2 s immunity, perfect for heavy boss phases or chaotic mobbing.
- Fireworks: Adds AoE bursts on shield break or recharge. Not essential, but makes mobbing fast and flashy.
- High-capacity purple shields: Still solid if you prefer consistency and uptime over effects. Keep shields full for the passive +30 % damage bonus from your skills.
Enhancements
Hard to farm but impactful.
Recommendations here are Vladof legendary Hero of Bullet enhancements as they come with Bullet Hose and Box Magazin which grants 30% of extra projectile per shot and 20% fire rate and 20% magazine size respectively.
For the passives, look for +Gun Damage and +Gun Critical Damage.
My current one are these two:
7. Firmware Loadout
- 3 pts Dead Eye: +25% accuracy, +25% gun crit damage, +15% crit × 5 stacks
- 2 pts Bullets to Spare: +fire rate / +20% mag size
Extra bullets + crit scaling synergize beautifully with the constant Overdrive uptime.
The Deadeye firmware is much easier to find on Shields, Class Mods and Enhancements. Whereas Bullets to Spare is easier to find for Repo Kits and Ordnances (Grenade/Heavy Weapons).
8. Weapons — Tested and Recommended
One reason this build shines: almost every weapon works. Still, a few deserve special mention.
Best All-Rounders
- Purple Burri SMG (Jacob’s parts) – Insane fire-rate noise machine; still one of the best mobbers.
- Lucian’s Flank / Lucian’s Coal – Large mag, great crits, perfect sustained DPS.
- Wombo Combo – Splash weapon with strong AoE potential.
Snipers
- Midnight Defiance (Twitch drop) – Ricochets melt mobs.
- Triple XL – Borderlands 3 Lyuda spiritual successor.
- Seven Sense (Jacob’s pistol) – Homing orbs on reload.
Bossing Specialists
- B.O.D. Shotgun – “Every gun type in one.” Fires stickies that detonate for absurd burst.
- Golden God – The centerpiece. Infinite ammo + pinpoint accuracy + Overdrive = literal melt mode. You’ll never let go of the trigger again.

9. Playstyle Notes
- Activate your action skill before every encounter. → This triggers Overdrive, double damage, and ammo regen.
- Keep the cannon running. → Kills refresh duration via Instant Tito.
- Cycle rep kits when cooldown threatens to drop.
- Maintain full shields for the extra 30% damage passive.
- Enjoy infinite ammo windows — switch to your strongest gun and erase everything.
Bossing is as simple as triggering Bullet Buddy Deluxe, switching to your Golden God or B.O.D., and watching the health bar vanish.
10. Final Thoughts
This Rafa setup is pure rhythm — shoot, reload, re-trigger, repeat. It doesn’t rely on cheesy interactions or broken crit knives; it’s just clean synergy between gun power, Overdrive scaling, and uptime management.
If you prefer fluid gameplay where every weapon feels viable and combat never stops, this is the build for you.
