I’ve recently upgraded my home network with Ubiquiti UniFi devices: the UniFi Cloud GatewayUltra, two Lite 8 PoE Switches, and two U6+ AccessPoints. This setup has really improved the reliability and performance of my network.

The UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra is the central hub, managing internet traffic and firewall rules. It’s easy to manage the network because it works with other UniFi devices.

The two Lite 8 PoE Switches are great for powering devices like access points and IP cameras, making it easier to connect all your devices. Their managed switch capabilities make it easy to control traffic.

It seemed to be a good time for an upgrade after almost 7 years with a non-smart vacuum cleaner. So in the end we bought an expensive - still with some Black Friday discount - robot vacuum cleaner. We didn’t actually plan for but got an offer from a friend to test his smart cleaning robot with floor mapping and such, last week after he upgraded to a new more intelligent version.

1. Set Up AdGuard Home: Follow the AdGuard Home Getting Started Guide to install and configure AdGuard Home on your desired machine (e.g., .10.5).

2. Configure DNS in UniFi Network Application:

   • Open the UniFi Network application.
   • Navigate to Settings > Networks.
   • Select the network (or VLAN) you wish to configure.
   • Scroll to the DHCP Name Server section.
   • Uncheck the Auto option next to DHCP Name Server.
   • Enter the IP address of your AdGuard Home instance (e.g., .10.5) as the primary DNS server.
   • Apply the changes.

This setup ensures that devices within the specified network use your AdGuard Home instance for DNS resolution, enhancing privacy and control over network traffic.

To separate your IoT devices, it is advisable to create a firewall rule to block new and invalid traffic from the IoT VLAN to your default VLAN. This allows you to talk to your devices while permitting only established and related or returning traffic.

On this page, I want to describe the setup of my home network. Not in too much detail, but more as a guide for myself and maybe others to follow on how to set up the devices.

• Gateway: 1 x UCG Ultra (Cloud Gateway Ultra).
• Switch: 2 x Switch Lite 8 PoE.
• Access Point: 2 x U6 Plus.
• Ethernet cables and power adapters for all devices.
